It is testament to Blackpool's electric start that they currently have their heads above water - albeit only by one goal from Wigan - but they have an uphill task if they are to avoid the fate that befell Burnley after their own suprising opening to the 2009-10 season. A testing trip to White Hart Lane is followed by a home clash with Bolton and then a final-day visit to Old Trafford where, 30 years ago, the Tangerines also played on the final day, having already been condemned to relegation to the Second Division. In their first term back in the top flight since then, Blackpool will be determined to still be in contention for survival come the final day and they will undoubtedly be praying that United have the title wrapped up by then.
For Tottenham, a season that has enabled the White Hart Lane faithful to experience dream Champions League nights against Inter Milan, Real Madrid and AC Milan could end in a nightmare scenario of a sixth-place finish and the absence of European football altogether next season. Spurs' hopes of emulating last year's fourth-place finish are looking increasingly slim and they require much more than just a win against Blackpool and in next week's crunch encounter with Manchester City. The North Londoners are relying on City to slip up elsewhere, though they would do well to be wary of Liverpool - currently in fifth - who could potentially pip them to a Europa League place should they beat Redknapp's charges in the penultimate game of the season at Anfield.
